Prof. Dr.-Ing. Dipl.-Wirt. Ing. Dear Readers, we are pleased to once again present you with a potpourri of news and highlights in the third 2022 issue of UdZ. First and foremost, we would like to introduce you to our new Uranos-X project. We are very proud to be in charge of the research on this complex topic and therefore dedicate the lead article of the present issue to this project (p. 6 ff.). Uranos-X was preceded by the ‘Gaia-X’ project, which was launched in 2019. In Gaia-X, international representatives frombusiness, science and politics are jointly shaping the framework conditions for the data exchange and business models of tomorrow. A key feature of Gaia-X is to have small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) participate in the project. FIR successfully contributed to the project by providing its expertise on the transformation of SMEs. With the Gaia-XperienceLab in the Smart Logistics Cluster, we will soon be offering a central point of contact for SMEs that facilitates their interactive entry into the transformation process. We have always seen it as our task to make new topics and developments accessible and implementable for companies. Sustainability is on everyone's lips and one of the biggest – if not the biggest – topic of our time. Sustainability is not a trend, but a transformative change, and it requires a full repositioning of industry. The pressure on companies to act is growing – and so is the uncertainty this change process brings. Gain a holistic viewof digitalization and sustainability with our article “Twin-Transition – Digitization and Sustainability Hand in Hand” (p. 14 ff.). The transformation to Industrial Sustainability is indispensable: Growth, cost optimization and time savings are no longer the sole guarantees of success. The article argues that sustainability transformation is not a burden, but an opportunity, and highlights how sustainability transformation can also advance your company. We continue our staff interview series with Gerrit Hoeborn (p. 62 ff.), who has been head of Business Transformation here at FIR since May 2022. Together with his team, he is driving forward the topic of Industrial Sustainability – The Integrated Management for a Sustainable Organization at FIR and in the Smart Logistics Cluster and has published a white paper of the same title. Furthermore, our specialist events also deal with the topics of “Resilience and Sustainability”: the CDOAachen, which took place on November 16 under themotto “Sustainable Digitalization for the Era of Uncertainty”, as well as the Insights Cluster Smart Logistic event on December 8, which will have a focus on strategies and implementation examples. And what is happening on the international stage? FIR and the Center Connected Industry, headed by Max-Ferdinand Stroh, are participating in the international ‘FLAIR’ project, with a staff member on site and a team of experts on RWTH Aachen Campus (p. 28 ff.). Together with the INC Invention Center and RWTH Aachen University, we are working on the InnoHK research initiative launched in Hong Kong, which aims to transform the region into a global hub for innovation and technology. And, last but not least, our experts in the area of “Smart Work” are on the road in Central and South America, seeking to provide new impetus for economic growth in Europe and Latin America. For the first time, they are hosting the international I4R Conference in Mexico. Under the motto “Closing the Gap between Science and Industry,” the congress serves as an umbrella event for two conferences taking place at the same time: The practice-oriented E-Mas International Conference and the Scientific Conference Production Systems and Logistics (CPSL). More information is available at: i4r.eu. Even if FIR’s key subject areas are wide and varied, they are also interlinked and share many objectives. That’s why interdisciplinary and cross-divisional projects are part of our daily practice. To make these interrelations clearer, we have developed the FIR Navigator, which offers you particularly easy access to FIR’s range of services and knowledge about relevant trends based on eight transformation drivers. With just one click, you can obtain subject-specific know-how and insight into FIR’s offerings – according to your needs and interests. In addition, the FIR Navigator (p. 37f.) provides you with information on ongoing projects, reference projects, and publications: fir-navigator.fir.de. We hope that we were able to inspire you with our expertise and our selection of topics in the 2022 UdZ issues – we are already looking forward to preparing next year’s issues. Finally, letme end on a personal note: After 26 years asmanaging director, I will be handing over the reins to Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Boos. The time at FIR has been, and is, very special to me. Not only because we work with industrial practitioners on relevant questions for practitioners, but also because our work generates new ideas and insights, and because it is fun to shed light on the manifold challenges industry is facing. And, ultimately, it is always exciting to learn how the solutions we develop help companies to move forward. None of this would be possible without a strong, motivated team and highly committed partners from industry, associations and politics. I would like to thank everyone who accompanied me during my time at FIR for 26 years full of inspiration and insight; for trusting cooperation, great dedication, andopen, honestwords; for creative, oftenunusual solutions and many joint successes on the path to the self-learning company of the future. I wishmy successor, Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Boos, a happy hand at all times, passion for the cause, and much success in leading FIR into the future. UdZ 03.22 / 7

FOCUS – BEST PRACTICES 8 / UdZ 03.22 Industrie 4.0 has played a key role in securing technology sovereignty in Germany, and it helpedmaintain the high 28 % contributionof industry to theGDP. Obviously, the collection, exchange, linking, andevaluationof data are key competencies in this context. Gaia-X will make a significant contribution to this in the future. It is a digital ecosystem with standardized, interoperable interfaces designed to enable companies to make data available and merge and share it securely and confidently1. Existing infrastructure offerings have been dominated by non-European providers due to economies of scale and network effects, preventing the emergence of a European alternative2. The architecture of Gaia-X is based on the principle of decentralization – the interaction of numerous individual platforms following common guidelines and standards. This allows a data infrastructure to emerge that is based on the values of openness, transparency, and trust. As a result, it is not just another cloud being established, but rather a connected system linking many cloud service providers. Motivation Small and medium-sized enterprises in Europe in particular are still wary of cloud services. The reasons for this are a lack of trust in the existing offerings, aversion to high investment costs, a lack of adequately trained employees, and concerns about dependencies. As a result, however, substantial value creation potential remains untapped. In production, machines and systems generate huge amounts of data that aremanaged andusedbydifferent stakeholders3. For thesustainable further development of industrial hubs in Europe, companies should be enabled and motivated to open up to Gaia-X in order to be able to realize positive synergy effects with their partners. This applies, in particular, to medium-sized companies, which are facing similar challenges. It is not just technical hurdles that need to be overcome: when entering into Gaia-X, the design of business models, organizational processes, and working methods will have to be transformed. Against this backdrop, the accompanying scientific project Uranos-X was initiated as part of the funding measure “Industrie 4.0 – GAIA-X Applications in Value Networks (InGAIA-X)”, launched by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). In this project, FIR at RWTH Aachen University is cooperating with the University of Paderborn, the Fraunhofer Institute IEM, and the OFFIS Institute for Information Technology, Oldenburg, to make it easier for manufacturing companies to participate in the Gaia-X architecture (see Figure 1). Figure 1: Principle of the European Gaia-X architecture (BMWi 2020, p. 9). Figure 1) zu vereinfachen. 1 s. SCHIEFERDECKER 2020, S. 30 – 35 ² s. BMWi 2019 ³ s. s. Appelrath et al. 2013, S. 72 1 SCHIEFERDECKER 2020, p. 30 – 35 ² BMWi 2019 ³ Appelrath et al. 2014, p. 72

Figure 2, S. 10). Data Ecosystem Infrastructure Ecosystem Federation Services Interoperable Data Spaces Transparency, Identity and Trust Reduction of Dependencies Sovereign Data and Exchange Figure 1: Principle of the European Gaia-X architecture (own presentation in accordance with BMWi 2020, p. 9) 4 s. By linking the infrastructures of several legally independent companies, Gaia-X is intended to create a large, uniform network, a so-called “federated data infrastructure”4. The administrative services (known as federation services) are necessary for the implementation of the architecture and thus for the establishment of the data space, in particular because they secure the trust of the participants5. Unlike central integration solutions, data spaces do not require the physical consolidation of data, but leave it at the respective source. A common database schema which the various participants have to adopt is also not required. Instead, integration takes place at the semantic level, for example through a common vocabulary. Data spaces can overlap, so individual members can be part of multiple data spaces (see Figure 2, p. 10). Data is exchanged directly between the participants; however, in order to meet the basic requirements of trust, data security, and interoperability, so-called federators are required. The roleof the federator is to provide such intermediary services. In addition to this original technological definition, data spaces are also interpreted in the business community as a format for business collaboration6. Uranos-X A number of specific Gaia-X use cases have been launched for each data space. The total of 78 projects so far provide the main opportunity for companies to participate in Gaia-X. To this end, the members of the German Gaia-X Hub from

In the area of Industry 4.0, for example, the Predict Machines (PdM) project deals with the predictive maintenance of machines. The Supply Chain Collaboration in a Connected Industry project aims to make better use of synergies in supplier networks. Despite considerable successes, the range of applications for Gaia-X is still limited. The use case-based approach followed so far leads to a large number of divergent isolated solutions; a methodologically uniform solution is now required for successful scaling. Due to the limited number of published use cases, the number of participants who can contribute and transfer outstanding knowledge about Gaia-X and its functions (e. g. Gaia-X hubs, joint project partners) is also limited. At the same time, there is a great need for knowledge among those for whom participation Gaia-X opens up promising business options, including, for example, industrial companies or SMEs that offer networked products or whose production would benefit from networking. The aim of the overarching accompanying project Uranos-X is to pool the knowledge generated in the use cases and to secure the transfer of knowledge from research to application in SMEs. Using a special development kit, SMEs are to be enabled to independently identify, specify, and implement Gaia-X-compliant applications. For the Uranos-X kit, all requirements, procedures, and methods of the previous use cases are compiled and synthesized into transferable solution patterns. This results in a direct transfer of knowledge from experienced companies and organizations to potential newcomers. The focus here is on the Industry 4.0 data space (see Figure 3, p. 11). Nevertheless, the project approach and the results should be transferable to other data spaces, such as that of the energy sector.

Durch den Aufbau eines Zielbildes kann schließlich aufgezeigt werden, welche weiteren Schritte Figure 3: Uranos-X transfer strategy for the dissemination of Gaia-X in the manufacturing sector (own representation) FIR’s Goals in the Uranos-X project For FIR, two areas are at the focus of the accompanying scientific project: the development of suitable tools for the evaluation of the opportunities provided by Gaia-X and the realization of an interactive transfer environment. In a first step, a web-based Quick Check will be implemented, providing SMEswith a questionnaire to findoutwhether and in what ways Gaia-X is relevant to their challenges. Thisminimizes initial barriers to entry. Furthermore, the Idea Fit supports the digital transformation of companies by identifying Uranos-X solution patterns for their business models. To this end, adapted methods for idea generation (e. g. customer journey, user story) are applied. A Gaia-X Maturity Model can be used to objectively determine whether an organizational unit has the required subject-specific capabilities. This will enable companies to transparently demonstrate their current Gaia-X capability. Finally, by defining a comprehensive conceptual objective, it can be shown which further steps are necessary to achieve the desired business transformation with the help of Gaia-X components. The Gaia-XperienceLab Modular transfer environments are being developed in order to capture the innovation potential of Gaia-X as widely as possible in the manufacturing industry. In this environment, the findings fromtheUranos-Xproject are tobepreparedandmade tangible specifically for SMEs. For this purpose, Gaia-XperienceLabs will be established in Aachen (under the direction of FIR) and Data Space Industry 4.0 Solution Template Ideas for applications Specification Integration Transformation SME

Diese Lernangebote Paderborn (under the direction of IEM). The labs are to be integrated into existing infrastructures in the Smart Logistics Cluster on RWTH Aachen Campus and in the IoT Xperience Center at Fraunhofer IEM. In more detail, the Gaia-XperienceLabs rest on three pillars: permanently exhibited demonstrator, modular experience forum, andmodular workshop offerings. A permanently exhibited demonstrator allows direct access to results of the relevant Gaia-X projects. The flexible concept of thedemonstratorallows itsfurtherdevelopmentonacontinual basis. By using dedicated input devices and connecting further hardware, such as additional tablets, it shall be made possible to run business games on the demonstrator. Through this format and interactive tutorials, users can experience “live” howGaia-Xworks andwhat different roles exist in the contexts of Industry 4.0 and digital ecosystems. The demonstrator will be expanded as needed with a modular experience forum. It introduces users to contents of particular interest to SMEs at individual stations. For example, the topics of data security&data sovereignty, data exchange, online data storage, and data spaces & data ecosystems can be presented in a vivid exhibition format. In addition to the demonstrator and the exhibition format, the XperienceLabs will be complemented by a modular workshop offering. The aim is to make onboarding to GAIA-X as easy as possible for SMEs. In addition to the content that can be experienced on site, a wide range of users is to be reached through a digital workshop offering. The aim is to develop a series of workshops on various topics that are tailored to the needs of all interested stakeholders. As further measures for the networking of all stakeholders, events will be organized in the communities of the project partners. Among other things, events are planned by the it's OWL technology network and the Mittelstand-DigitalZentrum Ruhr-OWL. These learning opportunities and transfer measures round out the Gaia-X development kit. Summary In the course of advancing digitalization, Uranos-X will make an important contribution to onboarding German SMEs to the emerging European data infrastructure GAIA-X. With the development of anoverarching conceptual objective, SMEs in the manufacturing sector in particular are to be supported in further developing their existing systems anddata intoGAIA-X-compliant data ecosystems for Industrie 4.0. To this end, the accompanying project focuses on abstracting and consolidating the results from the individual collaborative projects and use cases. After being prepared in a user-friendly manner, this content will be provided in the form of specific tools in a development kit and made

UdZ 03.22 / 15 Twin-Transition: Digitalisierung und Nachhaltigkeit Hand in Hand Digitalization and Sustainability Hand in Hand 2

FOCUS – BEST PRACTICES 16 / UdZ 03.22 What Impact is Climate Change Already Having on our Economy Today? Anyone who wanted to travel by train from London to York on 19 July 2022 had to switch to the evening hours. Due to the unprecedented heatwave in the UK of over 40 degrees Celsius, the rail network was unusable and traffic had to be significantly reduced. The infrastructure is designed to operate in a window of 45 degrees Celsius, which in southern England equates to -10 degrees Celsius to 35 degrees Celsius.1 It is not only here, and recent events in particular show this, that the consequences of climate change are being clearly felt. Since 1880, the earth has already warmed by 1.2 degrees Celsius2 and the temperature continues to rise every year. After energy producers, industry is the second largest source of greenhouse gas emissions. It therefore has a responsibility to reduce its ecological footprint. Inevitably, the question arises to what extent constant economic growth in the current style is compatible with the principles of sustainability and with a habitable planet. Infinite growth will not be possible with the earth‘s limited resources. How do we Value Corporate Sustainability? The EU Taxonomy Does your company havemore than 500 employees? Then you are already affected by the reporting obligations and must carry out an EU taxonomy compliance check that includes your turnover and, if applicable, your capital expenditure. From 2024, this limit is set to drop to 250 employees, 20million euros in turnover or 40 million euros in total assets, meaning that only small and medium-sized companies will be exempt from the reporting requirements. The EU taxonomy uses the six environmental targets shown in Figure 1 (see p. 9) to assess how sustainably a company operates. What Really Counts? The Materiality Analysis Provides Orientation How can you now make a significant contribution to the environmental goals? You probably already have some projects underway and would like to investigate whether you can are on the right track with this. S. 9) dargestellten sechs Umweltzielen. Was zählt wirklich? EineWesentlichkeitsanalyse 1 s. Tagesschau-Redaktion 2022 2 s.
